Tinkerer's Workshop

Ages 5 - 11

Design. Build. Invent. Test.

Take a tour of Tinkerer's Workshop.

"We really liked the parachute pigs when we visited a few weeks ago, so we made our own at home. Here's how we did it." - Rhett, recent Tinkerer's Workshop visitor
Get ready to tinker, build and test your own one-of-a-kind creations! Does it fly? Does it move? Does it ring? What's it made of? Your imagination is the limit! You'll find plenty of bits and pieces to tinker with, make things and try them out.

Tinkering is an exploratory way to learn about the structure of things, the materials things are made of, forces and energy used to make things go, and how things are controlled.

Designed for children ages 5-11, activities in the Tinkerer's Workshop build creative problem solving and critical thinking skills through project-based learning and the engineering design process.

Tinkerer's Workshop Exhibit Components

  • Visit the Investigation Stations where you can experiment with electrical circuits, color and light, and motion from gears, pulleys and springs.
  • In the Design and Modeling Center, capture your design concept using a variety of new and recycled craft materials.
  • Build your idea using K'Nex, Legos and real hardware like pegboard squares, nuts, bolts, wheels, hinges and pulleys at the Building Stations.
  • You can try out your invention at one of the Testing Centers where you'll find ramps, air blowers, timers and scales.
  • Don't miss watching pigs fly at the Pig Parachute Drop Tower! After you've assembled your parachute, you can test it at this tower with pulley, drop and release mechanism.
  • Tell your invention story at Tinkerer's Video Diary. Record a video describing the making of your one-of-a-kind creation. Save it to inspire other tinkerers and to watch next time you come.
