Description/Duties: Visiting Tinkerers or Artists facilitate spontaneous and planned learning experiences in the Tinkerers Workshop and Design Center exhibits at the Museum.  Volunteers will work directly with children (5-11years old) and their accompanying adults to facilitate engineering design challenges, build models and encourage creative problem solving through tinkering.  Visiting Tinkerers and Artists will implement curriculum prepared by Museum Educators. Visiting Tinkerers and Artists are encouraged to become Resident Tinkerers or Artists. (See job description)

Training provided/required: 
• General Volunteer orientation and application
• Tinkerer’s workshop training with education staff.
• Shadow visiting Tinkerer or Artist for at least 2 shifts.

Commitment:  Must commit to a minimum of 8 hours per month for 3 months.

Shifts: Flexible- but generally peak Museum hours (Friday 10-5, Sat 10-5, Sunday 12-5, Spring Break, AISD school holidays)

Considerations: Intense public contact with adults and children.  Individuals with teaching experience or an engineering background, as well as working artists are encouraged to participate. Comfort in working with adults and children of all ages, race, abilities and background required. Spanish fluency helpful.

How to apply: All new volunteers will need to complete an application, background check and orientation. The application is available at the link below. Orientations are held every first Wednesday of the month from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Museum.  If you plan to attend, please contact Jessica Wilson, Volunteer Coordinator at 512-472-2499 x210 or jwilson@austinkids.org so you can be added to the roster. Dinner is served for all orientations so RSVP is required.
