Full day camps (on-site, with field trips)

Ages 7 - 10
Children will look forward to field trips* at exciting places, experiencing innovative hands-on activities, eating lunch in the park, watching an on-topic educational video and playing in the Museum! Our teachers will keep your kids engaged and safe, with a 1:6 ratio, while they explore and learn.
* Field trip destinations subject to availability. In the event a trip is cancelled it will be replaced with a similar trip.

ECO EXPLORERS

Keep Austin green! We’ll explore things kids can do to make an impact. Field trips will take us to the Botanical Gardens, the Austin Zoo and Whole Foods, where we’ll learn about sustainable farming! Back at ACM we’ll make a mechanical trash grabber, a homemade water filter and art from recycled materials. It’s time to go green with ACM!

SCIENCE-PALOOZA!

Come discover, explore and experiment! Be a part of the exciting world of science as we explore everything from atoms to zoology! Field trips may include a visit to UT’s research labs, a guided fossil hunt and a trip to the Brackenridge Field Lab to investigate insects! At ACM we’ll play with polymer slime, transport a water balloon using only a coat hanger, try chromatography and more! Get a taste of a scientist’s work in this camp!

COOKING AND BAKING SCIENCE

We let the young chefs out of the kitchen and take them on field trips to discover the exciting world of food chemistry! Cook a featured food every day after investigating the science behind it. Field trips may include Amy’s Ice Cream, Great Harvest Bread Company and Whole Foods. Add some tasty science to your summer and let us kick it up a notch.
Allergy note: Nuts and obvious nut products will not knowingly be used in our activities/recipes.

ENGINEER IT! (with all new activities)

Design, invent and build in this popular camp! We’ll go on field trips to UT, where we’ll visit the Aerospace Engineering department, the Nanoscience Center and the Chemical Engineering lab! At ACM we’ll make rubber band cars, hovercrafts, and power lights with pennies. We’ll work together as we follow the design process to tackle real-world challenges in this fun and creative camp!

GIRLS EXPLORE SCIENCE (with all new activities)

Girls rule the Museum this week! Have a blast experiencing different science careers in our hands-on camp. Field trips will take you to meet inspiring role models at UT labs and in the Austin science community. At ACM we’ll try the science out ourselves by making gooey polymers, constructing geodesic gumdrop domes and designing dare-devil dirigibles!

MAKER KIDS

Make, create, invent, craft and play in this hands-on camp inspired by the spirit of creativity and Make Magazine. We’ll go on field trips, including exploring video game development at Amaze Entertainment and fine arts at the Austin Museum of Art. At ACM, we’ll collaborate to craft our very own model of a city, star in a comic strip and explore the science of magic. This camp puts the DIY (do it yourself) spirit in full gear!


Half day camps (on-site)

Ages 4-6
Looking for a unique and fun learning and socialization experience for your 4-6 year old child? Then you'll love our half day camps! Kids will try experiments, make arts and crafts, learn to work as a team, cooperate and share in an informal, yet structured environment (1:5 ratio). Activities may include Storytime, snack time, arts, science activity stations, music and movement, guided imagining and free play in the Museum.

YOUNG SCIENTISTS

Have a blast making fantastic fizzes and slimy surprises, mixing your own colors, building mini rockets and cooking up biotic treats! Kids are taught to ask lots of questions and experiment. Make sticky slimes, discover scale, play with magnets, magnifying glasses and more, while learning about your world.

BACKYARD SAFARI

Explore the world of animals and insects that live in your own backyard! Learn about bats, salamanders and armadillos! What makes them special? How do they make Austin special? We’ll play games and sing songs, build our own shell of armor, camouflage in costume and do science and math activities while learning about a different Austin animal each day!

SMARTEST ARTISTS

Mini Monets will love creating their very own works of art in the ACM studio. Explore painting, sculpting and drawing while learning about math and science! Mix colors, draw shapes, make polymer art and create an ice sculpture in this artistic experience.

Perfect for aspiring astronomers and astronauts in the making! Hear stories, perform experiments, paint murals, make mobiles and sing songs as we explore our moon, the planets and stars both near and far. We’ll also get into dramatic play as we make a space suit and design a space shuttle to take and imaginary trip to the moon!

DINOSAUR MANIA

Designed for the aspiring paleontologist! Enjoy tons of activities, stories, songs, skill-builders and games centered on the ancient reptiles you love! Make dino arts and crafts, learn dino names, make dino tooth necklaces, play dino concentration, make a hatching dino baby in an egg, excavate tiny dinos and more!

COOKING WITH MATH

Kitchen helpers are invited to hone their cooking AND math skills! Enjoy cutting, rolling, spreading, stirring, mashing, kneading, mixing, measuring, sorting, shaping, classifying and more, as you practice being a chef! All recipes are for single servings, so every child will make each of the two daily recipes from start to finish!

*ACM will reserve spots for girls in robotics camps. Unused spots will be released 6 wks. before first day of camp.

MINDSTORMING A LEGO VILLAGE
For kids completing grades 1 & 2

Join the team to design an interactive LEGO® Mindstorms® village. Pet shops, toll roads, park rides and zoos - our village needs you and your imagination! Campers with any or all levels of robotics skills will enjoy this fanciful design experience.

ROBOTICS INVENTIONS
For kids completing grades 3, 4, & 5

Inventors of all experience levels are invited to learn how to program working robotic inventions using LEGO® Mindstorms® NXT! Get creative with your designs, explore the world with sensors, and learn that YOU are the brains behind the whole operation! This hands-on camp is a great self-esteem-builder and tons of fun.


Cancellation Policy

A non-refundable fee of $35 is included in camp tuition price. Cancellations made 15 or more business days before the start of camp will receive a full refund minus the processing fee. If you withdraw from a camp program 14 or fewer business days before the start of the camp, for ANY reason, you will receive a partial refund, ONLY if we can fill your spot from the waiting list before the first day of camp. If we can fill your spot, you will receive a flat refund of $100 for full day camp, and a flat refund of $50 for half day camp.


Scholarships

Download a scholarship application here. Deadline is March 27, 2009. Scholarships will be awarded on April 15. Scholarships are funded by the Museum's Open Door Initiative.


Additional info

ACM will continue to offer curb-side pick up as long as the current downtown development will allow, but it cannot be guaranteed. When minimum enrollments are not met, we reserve the right to cancel or reschedule camps. If this occurs, your entire tuition will be refunded. Activities and field trips mentioned are subject to change without notice.
