This December, Austin Children’s Museum will host The Heart Gallery of Central Texas, which displays photos of foster children who are waiting to be adopted. A project of the Adoption Coalition of Texas and CASA organizations across Central Texas, The Heart Gallery of Central Texas is both an art exhibit and community education effort. This gallery of stirring portraits reveal the amazing spirits and individuality of children in foster care.
The Heart Gallery of Central Texas is an eight-month recruitment and community awareness project to find families for foster care children and create awareness about the children in general. Many of the children featured in the gallery are older or special needs children or members of a sibling group, and considered "hard-to-place" in permanent homes.
The New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department founded The Heart Gallery in 2001 as a way to help foster children find families. Many children have found loving homes through The Heart Gallery exhibit. Sixty percent of children in the photos from 2005 to 2007 have been adopted.
This year, over 50 renowned Central Texas photographers contributed their time to photographing these children.
