ACM Press Releases:

6/9/2008 - Discover Engineering Event at the Austin Children's Museum

Free admission and hands-on engineering fun all day.

Austin, TX (June 9, 2008) - Can you build a table from newspaper that could hold a heavy book? Or generate electricity with your own muscle power? Children and families are invited to the Discover Engineering Event at Austin Children’s Museum on Sunday June, 22 from 1:00 to 5:00pm for hands-on engineering activities and demonstrations. Thanks to Discover Engineering Central Texas and Applied Materials, Museum admission will be FREE all day.
Discover Engineering Activities, Sunday, June 22, 1-5pm

Design Squad Challenges: Try your hand at three design challenges from the PBS TV show Design Squad. With help from the American Society of Civil Engineers, make a contraption that carries a ball down a zip-line in 4 seconds, design electrical circuits, build newspaper tables and more.

Cyberchase Math Games: That wacky bird Digit from Cyberchase will teach children amazing ways to find mathematical measurements using only their body and a string!

Experience Energy: Participate in hair-raising static electricity experiments with the Van de Graff generator from Austin Energy, generate electricity with your own muscle power and check out solar-powered cars built by kids at 4-H camp.

Cleaning our Water: Learn how City of Austin engineers provide our city with clean drinking water.

UT Solar Decathlon: Hear Prof. Russell Krepart speak about how UT Architecture and Engineering students are building an energy-efficient solar-powered house for the U.S. Dept. of Energy competition.

These real world experiences will give visitors an opportunity to see engineering as problem-solving, build science and math skills, and increase interest and motivation to participate in engineering activities later in life.

Bilingual facilitators will be available throughout the day, and take-home materials will be provided in both English and Spanish.

The Discover Engineering Event is sponsored by Discover Engineering Central Texas with additional support provided by Applied Materials. Event partners include the Austin Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers, KLRU/PBS, the City of Austin, Austin Energy and UT Prof. Russell Krepart.
