ACM Press Releases:

5/30/2007 - "We are from Vietnam"

We are from Vietnam Exhibit Opens at the Austin Children’s Museum on June 4

Austin, Texas (May 30, 2007) On June 4, Austin Children’s Museum will hold an opening celebration from 5 – 7 pm for the exhibit We are from Vietnam: Family Immigration Stories from Austin, Texas in the Community Gallery.  The exhibit will showcase children’s art depicting Vietnamese immigration to Texas.

As part of an oral history project, second and fifth graders from Walnut Creek Elementary School created comic strips and story boxes after interviewing their parents and grandparents who had immigrated from Vietnam to Texas.  Students illustrated stories about the reasons their family immigrated, the hardships of their journey and the adjustments they made to new life in the US.   The artwork documents and celebrates the richness and diversity represented by the immigrant Vietnamese community in Austin, Texas.  The We are from Vietnam exhibit will be featured in the Community Gallery through July 31.

The artwork for this exhibit was facilitated jointly by The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, Texas Folklife and the Walnut Creek Elementary School Vietnamese Culture Program. It is part of an upcoming exhibit developed by the TexasStateHistoryMuseum on historical immigration through Galveston, Forgotten Gateway: Coming to America Through Galveston Island.

The mission of Austin Children's Museum is to create innovative learning experiences for children and families that equip and inspire the next generation of creative problem solvers.
